GATAPU-General Aptitude Test for Admission to Polish Universities

The areas of Chemistry covered in the Aptitude Test :

Chemistry

Inorganic Chemistry
  • Atomic and molecular structure: relation between the position of an element in the Periodic Table and its atomic number,  atomic mass,  the number of electrons available for bonding;  trends in ionization energy, electronegativity, and the relative sizes of ions and atoms, relation between the position of an element in the periodic table and its quantum electron configuration, and reactivity with other elements in the table.
  • Chemical bonds: biological, chemical, and physical properties of matter result from the ability of atoms to form bonds based on electrostatic forces between electrons and protons, and between atoms and molecules; covalent, ionic, metallic and hydrogen bonding; drawing Lewis dot structures.
  • Conservation of Matter and Stoichiometry: writing balanced chemical equations, mole definition, determination of  molar mass of a molecule from its chemical formula and a table of atomic masses, conversion of the mass of a molecular substance to moles, number of particles or volume of gas at standard temperature and pressure; calculation of the masses of reactants and products in a chemical reaction from the mass of one of the reactants or products, and the relevant atomic masses.
  • Gases and Their Properties: the kinetic molecular theory, the gas laws, the values and meanings of standard temperature and pressure (STP), Celsius and Kelvin temperature scales, solving problems using the ideal gas law in the form PV=nRT
  • Acids and Bases: the observable properties of acids, bases and salt solutions,  the Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry, and Lewis acid-base definitions, strong acids and bases, the pH scale.
  • Solutions: definitions of solute and solvent, the concentration of a solute in terms of grams per liter, molarity, parts per million and percent composition.
  • Chemical Thermodynamics: temperature and heat flow in terms of the motion of molecules, exothermic and endothermic processes, Hess's Law.
  • Reaction Rates: dependence between reaction rate and concentration of reactants, temperature, and pressure; the role a catalyst plays in increasing the reaction rate, definition and role of activation energy in a chemical reaction.
  • Chemical Equilibrium: use of  Le Chatelier's principle to predict the effect of changes in concentration, temperature, and pressure,  writing and calculating an equilibrium constant expression for a reaction.

  • Nuclear Processes: atomic nucleus changes, three most common forms of radioactive decay (alpha, beta, and gamma), radioactive decay of naturally occurring and human-made isotopes, nuclear fission, and nuclear fusion, calculation of  the amount of a radioactive substance remaining after an integral number of half-lives have passed.

The unique nature of carbon atom and catenation.
Classification of organic compounds, nomenclature and homologous series.

  • Hydrocarbons: Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, Aromatic compounds. General methods of preparation and properties of hydrocarbons. Petroleum as an industrial source of hydrocarbons. The application of Markownikoff’s rule is expected.
